GPA smashes Colombo PCF in tournament opener
The Inter-Academy under-13 cricket tournament organised by CCC School of Cricket got underway during the weekend. 20 teams under 4 groups are playing this year.The first game at the C.M.S. Grounds Kotte saw newcomers Grand Park Arena Cricket Academy (GPA) taking on the much-fancied Colombo Premier Cricket Foundation (CPCF) team and winning by a handsome margin of 151 runs
GPA won the toss and openers Hansaka Perera (36) and Pasindu Theekshana (20) gave them a rollicking start by putting up 65 runs in 7.5 overs. Building on the solid platform top order batsmen Matheesha Nadul (103 n.o., 67 balls; 2x6; 14x4) and Nethul Anuhas (73 n.o., 11x4) set the grounds ablaze with a record unbroken partnership of 154 runs for the 3rd Wicket. Umal Weerasekera captured the only two wickets to fall.
Chasing a mammoth target of 263 in their allotted 30 overs, CPCF batsmen were all at sea against the disciplined bowling attack of GPA.Only three of their batsmen managed to get to double figures, highest being 29 by opener Minuka Wijerathne.
The GPA bowling attack was led by the left arm paceman A.J. Paranawidana who took 2/16 in 5 overs. Right-arm leg spinner Randiv Perera took 3/21 runs in his 5 over spell.Left arm spinner Nethul Anuhas was the pick of the bowlers taking 3/20 in 6 overs. Nethul had an outstanding game with both the bat and the ball. Wicket-keeper Adeesha Maxwell was the star fieldsman holding on to three brilliant catches behind the wickets.
