Govt workers neglected – Lalkantha

National People’s Power (NPP) Kandy District candidate K.D. Lalkantha said that for the past six months, this Government had failed to look into the plight of Government workers.

“The Government has already imposed taxes for 26 essential items and the people are struggling to survive as a result. Salary increments for Government workers have not been granted commensurate with the steep rise in the cost of living index. Furthermore, the Ceylon Electricity Board has continued to heap more misery on consumers by hiking the electricity bills unreasonably. The pensions due for this year had also been suspended,” he said while addressing an NPP Media briefing on 7 July.

NPP candidate Mahinda Ratnayaka said that the Government is intimidating officials of the Central Bank and that through such actions, the badly stagnant economy cannot be resuscitated. “That alone shows that this regime is prepared to achieve its aims through the exertion of undue force and influence. The Government has decided to furlough workers from State institutions, citing the COVID-19 situation. The migrant workers are also facing a dire plight due to the loss of employment in those countries and the Government has shown no interest to look into their predicament to date.”

NPP National List candidate Mahinda Jayasingha said that the education system is in utter disarray and that students still do not know when this year’s General Certificate of Education Advanced Level Examination will be held.
