Govt trying to blame 19A for issues – NMSJ
By Nabiya Vaffoor
The Government is trying to evade problems of the country and the society, by blaming it on the 19th Amendment, said the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ).
“All the sectors, including health, agriculture and environment are facing issues. The Government should understand that it’s not the 19th Amendment which created these inevitable concerns, but a Government with weak administration,” said Ven. Mugunuwatana Siddantha Thera.
Further, he said if the Government couldn’t solve these concerns of the public with a democratic amendment such as the 19th Amendment, how can the public be assured that these issues will be solved under the 20th Amendment, which concentrates power on one individual.
“We suggest to the Prime Minister and the President to create a panel of experts including representatives of all religious groups and social groups, to get ideas for creating a new Constitution, instead of amending the existing one,” the monk said.
He said so on 13 October, while addressing an NMSJ Media briefing.
