Govt to table Supplementary Estimate of Rs 200B
The Government is planning to table a Supplementary Estimate of Rs 200 billion in Parliament shortly, with the aim of getting it passed to control the spread of COVID-19 pandemic as well as to look after State-related expenses.
PM Mahinda Rajapaksa, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, is set to present this proposal to the Cabinet shortly before its submission to the House for approval.
Meanwhile, informed sources revealed the aforesaid sum will also be the highest such amount sought by a Government through a Supplementary Estimate in the Legislature in the history of this country.
PM Rajapaksa as the subject Minister has mentioned in his proposal to the Cabinet that the said sum is sought by the Government to carry out various programmes aimed at effective controlling of the spread of the pandemic, the continuation of the immunisation programme to prevent people from contracting the illness, treatment of patients at quarantine centers, the coordination of health services here to tackle the third wave of the pandemic, along with the carrying out of numerous development projects without interruption throughout the country.
