On Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s directives, the Government has allocated USD 50 million to pay shippers and clear around 800 containers of essential commodities held at the Port. State Minister of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development, and Consumer Protection,Lasantha Alagiyawanna, said yesterday (28) at the weekly Cabinet media briefing at the Department of Government Information that there are two types of containers at the port, one with imports made against import controls and the other with imports made under existing laws.

He mentioned that the Prime Minister directed the Finance Ministry to release foreign currency to clear the containers after the importers stated they did not have any. “There are other containers which have been brought in violation of the law, and they will be confiscated and released to Lanka Sathosa. So the containers that were imported in violation of the rule will not be freed as they wish under the current method,” he noted, adding that those two types of containers would be handled differently.
