By Gagani Weerakoon and Methmalie Dissanayake
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa charged in Parliament on 23 October that the shortsightedness and negligence on the part of the Government were the root causes for the spreading of COVID-19.
He praised Health sector officials, the Tri- Forces and the Police for their contributions to control COVID-19, at least to the level achieved at present.
He urged Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarcahchi to accept that COVID-19 has turned towards community transmission level from the cluster level.
Premadasa made these observations while seconding the adjournment debate moved by Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake on the spread of COVID-19.
He said that the economy is collapsing due to this reason.
He further added, he was the first to talk about COVID-19 in February this year, even before the first COVID-19 case was reported on 11 March. He also added the first 1,000 cases were reported by 15 May, the second 1,000 on 27 June and the third 1,000 on 30 August. He stated the fourth 1,000, the fifth 1,000 and the sixth 1,000 were reported on 6, 13 and 22 October, respectively. He added, Government Members had humiliated him when he talked of this situation.
“ Wanniarachchi said, the Virus was contained on 18 April with the intention of holding the General Election”.
He also claimed, PCR testing machines have broken down. “The PCR test reports are delayed. There isn’t ample trained staff to do these tests. There aren’t an ample number of beds at intensive care units in case the Virus spreads rapidly.”
Hence, the Opposition demands the Government take quick action to bring this situation under control, he said.
