Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando requested Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to call for a CID investigation into the power outage experienced in Parliament on Friday (3), during the Committee Stage Debate on Expenditure Head of Defence Ministry.
Speaking in Parliament, Fernando said that ensuring the security in Parliament is crucial.
“Steps should be taken to ensure the security of the House. The power management in Parliament should not be outsourced. I request the Speaker to take steps regarding this. It would be better if an engineer could be recruited for Parliament to manage the power supply in the House,” he said.
A major electricity breakdown that occurred Islandwide affected Parliament for several minutes before the generators were switched on. However, after few hours the generator also stopped with only the chamber lights and back up battery of the audio system in operation.
