Govt not transparent with Media and public

In order to maintain, perceptions of being one of the countries which defeated COVID-19 successfully, the Government is hiding the real situation of the latest COVID-19 wave from the Media and the public, claimed Parliamentarian J.C. Alawathuwala.
“They claimed that COVID-19 had been successfully quelled, in order to earn political clout during the previous election. Even the relief, provided during curfew periods, was delivered according to a political mechanism,” he added.
Alawathuwala further claimed, the Government is not being transparent with the Media and the public about areas figured out as being COVID-19 clusters.
“The Government should inform the public about this, so that they will refrain from travelling to such areas. The government is pushing the whole country into danger, due to the lack of transparency,” he added.
He further stated, though areas such as Gampaha were under lockdown, no relief programmes or a mechanism to provide essential services to the public were taken.
“Speaking to PHIs we found out, the Government hasn’t applied the quarantine rules equally to all sectors. The PHIs confirmed to their knowledge, the group of Indian workers did not go under any quarantine process or PCR tests through them,” he added.
Alawathuwala expressed these views, yesterday (12), addressing a Media briefing at the Samagi Jana Balawegaya headquarters.
