Govt not responsible for Kinniya ferry tragedy – Lanza
The use of a ferry across the Kuranjankarni Lagoon in Kinniya has been permitted by the SJB and the Kinniya Municipal Council, which is supported by the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, and the Government cannot be held responsible for the ferry’s accident, according to State Minister of Infrastructure Nimal Lanza.
He said so in response to a statement made by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa in Parliament yesterday (23) that the Government expresses great grief for the loss of lives as a result of this unfortunate occurrence and that a formal investigation is underway.
While sweeping the tragedy under the carpet, the State Minister defended the Road Development Authority (RDA), claiming that it had nothing to do with the ferry’s use.
“It was impossible for a long time to build a bridge across the lagoon, and the Good Governance Government did nothing during that time. Our Government has begun building this bridge as a response to the people’s distress, and steps will be taken to expedite its completion,” he said.
In addition, he said the regrettable situation occurred with the agreement of the relevant Municipal Council to utilise this ship in a dangerous manner. He said the RDA will provide a passenger transportation system across the lagoon in the future in conformity with the proper criteria.
