Govt must import chemical fertiliser – Vajira
By Nabiya Vaffoor
UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardana emphasised that chemical fertilisers should be imported immediately, as the Government has failed to provide organic fertiliser to farmers as required. He was responding to a query about the UNP’s stance with regard to the fertiliser issue facing the country following the ban on chemical fertiliser. The media briefing was held at the UNP head office in the Galle region.
“Chemical fertilisers should be ordered as soon as possible. Having said that, this statement is not antiorganic fertilisers and the Government cannot create as much organic fertiliser as crops would want,” Abeywardana remarked. He stated that if a Government works against these two methods introduced by the World Food Programme then that Government has already done the unthinkable.
“The World Food Programme has proposed two solutions to the global food crisis. One method is to edit the genes of the plants by providing them with more of the food nutrients required to change. To increase the product, the second way is to adjust the sulphuric, nitrogen, and other acids in the chemical fertiliser. If a Government works against these two ways, that Government has already done a great dis-service,” he continued.
