Trade Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena yesterday (18) said in Parliament that through the Appropriation Bill 2021, the Government encourages exports and local manufacturing and that the Bill stands with the hard- working people of the country.
Participating in the Second Reading on the Appropriation Bill 2021, Dr. Gunawardena said that the Government has granted concessions on loan repayments and tax repayments for those who had to endure many difficulties due to the bizarre economic policies such as huge taxation implemented by the former United National Front (UNF)-led Government.
Dr. Gunawardena queried: “Now Opposition Parliamentarians allege that we fabricate economic data. It was they who did that during their tenure, not us. In the Budget 2016, more than Rs 200 billion was allocated for the education sector. But it was revealed that they had only spent Rs 65 million for the education sector in that year. What happened to the rest of the money? The UNF-led Government had two Finance Ministers within the short period of five years of their rule.
What did they do for development? Furthermore, before 2015, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had so many challenges. He had to overcome 30 years of war, a tsunami disaster and a global economic crisis in 2010. The UNF-led Government never had such challenges. So they could have done better. But they never did. The only thing they did was taxed the people more and more. No country could be developed when a Government behaves like that.”
