Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila said the Government is confident that it can ensure an uninterrupted fuel supply amidst a global economic crisis.

Speaking in Parliament, Gammanpila said the country is facing several crisis situations. “First of all, we have to accept that we have a problem. If we continue to say that we have enough money and enough foreign currency, then there will be no escape from them.

That is why I openly said that we will have to face a financial crisis in several months. The Government does not have enough rupees and the country does not have enough USD.

How did this happen? As a nation we spend more money than our actual income. Every government since 1955 should be held responsible for the present crisis we have to go through.

This is a final result of chain of events and any government could have faced the similar situation,” the Minister claimed. Speaking further about the rumours of a fuel shortage in the country, Gammanpila said that there was no fuel shortage. “If there is a fuel shortage the fuel in tanks will be drained.

Also, stations usually have fuel stocks sufficient for two to three days. When the whole country is trying to buy fuel suddenly, then there will be a temporary shortage, at fuel stations,” he said.
