Govt awards canal and reservoir projects to China

The Government awarded two canal and reservoir projects to China’s CAMC Engineering Company Limited and the China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd.
CAMC Engineering Company which bid for the construction was finally awarded the project at the prices agreed upon by the negotiating agreement with the Mahaweli Water Security Investment Programme under the Mahaweli Authority.
The 95.86-kilometre-long North Central Main Canal Project has been designed to supply drinking water and water for cultivation in the North Central Province and up to the Vavuniya District in the Northern Province.
The second project was awarded to the China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd, at an amount agreed upon in consultation with the Company, the Government said. The 28-kilometre-long tunnel has been planned across the Minneriya, Girithale and Hurulu Nature Reserves and the sanctuaries of the North Central Main Canal Construction Project.
The Government has expedited the construction of the three main canals in the North Western Province Canal Project: a canal from the Mahakithula Reservoir to the Kirimetiyawa and Sella Perama tanks, the canal from the Maha Kirula Reservoir to the Kaduruwewa and the new tunnel from the Bowatenna to Wemedialla Tank.
Methodologies adopted for land acquisition were discussed and plans were drawn up for expediting the process of public awareness from June 2020.
The project in the North Western Province expects to provide benefits to 12,500 hectares of farmlands, thereby improving the quality of life of 13,000 farmer families, the Mahaweli Authority revealed.
The Asian Development Bank will allocate USD 675 million for the construction of phase one and the feasibly study of phase two of the Mahaweli Water Security Investment Programme. The Cabinet approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Irrigation on the construction of the North Central Main Canal and the construction of the Central Main Canal and North Western Main Canal under the programme.
