Gov. policy on cremations remains unchanged - Keheliya
Despite the United Nation's (UN) recent claims condemning the forced cremations of COVID-19 infected bodies in Sri Lanka, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella stated today (26) during the Cabinet Media Briefing that the Government's stance on this issue has not changed.
UN Human Rights experts' stated yesterday (25), that the policy of forced cremations is contrary to the beliefs of Muslims and other minorities in the country, and that there has been no established scientific or medical evidence that the burial of COVID-19 infected bodies will increase the risk of the virus spreading.
However, the Minister further stated that the Government will follow the guidelines given by the relevant Health Authorities regarding the matter, as taking decisions that violate these guidelines would jeopardize the health and safety of the general public.
