General Secretary of the Communist Party, Dr. G. Weerasinghe, said the Government must not sign any unfavourable pacts or agreements with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, as it would be counterproductive to the country.

Issuing a special release, Dr. Weerasinghe stated that though it has not been included in the agenda that is due to be discussed between the visiting U.S. official and the Government top brass, he suspects that Pompeo and his Sri Lankan counterparts would still discuss at length the way to press ahead with the signing of the much-maligned MCC and SOFA Agreements.

He also added that the Government should take care not to fall into the trap set by the U.S., in blindly agreeing to sign the controversial pacts, as its consequences will be felt far and wide.
