Local GMOA warns of COVID spread during festive season

The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) warns that if caution is not practiced during the upcoming festive season, the coronavirus will spread rapidly by early next year.

Secretary of the GMOA Dr. Senal Fernando said it is mandatory that spectators at cricket matches wear face masks and adhere to health guidelines at all times.

While adhering to health guidelines at all times, the public must also ensure that they are fully vaccinated.

Dr. Fernando said the public is aware of intricacies that arose due to negligent public behaviour during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year period this year.

Similarly, if the public disregards the prevailing COVID-19 situation during the festive season, it could lead to a spreading of the virus.

Meanwhile, commenting on port and airport operations in an attempt to prevent the Omicron COVID variant from entering the country, Dr. Fernando said the government’s responsibility is to source all necessary vaccine doses and to encourage the public towards obtaining the vaccine through promoting vaccinations.

He added that any new variant can enter the country through ports and airports, similar to how a Lankan national contracted the Omicron variant after returning from Nigeria.

Hence, he stressed that all those who enter the country must undergo a PCR test.

Dr. Fernando further said ports, airports and the Health Ministry must possess adequate resources to conduct gene-sequencing if the test returns positive.

He said these facilities must be established on location in order to identify which variants enter the country.
