The Independent Association of Indigenous and Ayurveda Physicians (IAIAP) warned they will take legal action against the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) for obstructing indigenous medical clinics, depriving the public of the right to medical treatment.

IAIAP Convener, Dr. Sumudu Liyanarachchi yesterday (29) accused the GMOA President, Dr.Anuruddha Padeniya and some of its members of double standards by voicing their own opinions about protecting and promoting indigenous medical methods, cultivation and food items, when in reality he and his union are hindering Ayurvedic treatment methods.

“There is a potential for successful outcomes in preventing side effects of the COVID vaccine through Ayurvedic and indigenous medical methods. But the GMOA is obstructing clinics held in collaboration with the COVID Death Prevention Union (CDPU) for people with after effects of the vaccination,”Dr. Liyanarachchi said.

She alleged that a team of western doctors had sought an injunction against a ‘Vaccination Recovery Clinic’ conducted by indigenous medical practitioners in the Ampara District last week and said that there was a question as to whether there is a conspiracy against indigenous medical practitioners.

Accusing the GMOA of hindering the services provided by Government registered practitioners of the two schools of medicine, she queried whether this is an attempt by unionists to eradicate Ayurveda and indigenous medicine from the country. “They have no right to violate the right people have in obtaining indigenous medical services. She said her union is ready to take legal action against western medical union should they infringe this right.

Secretary of the GMOA, Dr.Senal Fernando in a letter to the Director General Health Services (DGHS), Dr. Asela Gunawardena said that the ‘Vaccine Recovery Clinic’ would only cause fear among the public and discourage them from getting the COVID vaccine.

He said that a spate of clinics had been organised by the aforementioned CDPU around the country in violation of the health guidelines issued by the DGHS as the competent authority of the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance sans approval of the Medical Officer of Health (MoH) of the relevant areas.
