GMOA lays the blame on Epidemiology Chief
By JT de Silva
The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has warned that due to the failure of Head of the Epidemiology Unit, Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, to furnish the latest data and details concerning the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, since the emergence of the first wave here, all efforts being made to control the spread of the illness could collapse in a heap.
GMOA Secretary Dr. Senal Fernando charged that had the Epidemiology Unit Head furnished the precise details and data regarding the spread of the illness before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year period, the emergence of the so-called third wave could have been overcome or even nipped in the bud. Dr. Fernando also alleged Epidemiology Unit Head should be held accountable for the spread of the third wave of the COVID-19 virus.
The GMOA General Secretary urged the Health authorities to initiate swift disciplinary action against the Head of the Epidemiology Unit over his irresponsible conduct. He also requested the health authorities to form a Committee comprising specialists and technicians versed in the subject of controlling pandemics to fight the spread of COVID-19. The GMOA General Secretary also warned that if the Government fails to take prompt action, on the issues raised by them, its repercussions would also be felt before long by the people and the country.
