General Election 2020: No foreign observers due to pandemic
Foreign election monitors will not be able to serve as observers for tomorrow's (05) General Election due to travel restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, stated the People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL).
PAFFREL Executive Director, Rohana Hettiarachchi stated that although foreign observers will not be attending, they will be studying the Election process.
Hettiarachchi noted that the EU and the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) were prepared to visit the country to monitor the Election; however, they were unable to travel to the country due to an issue regarding their flights.
According to reports, ANFREL will be conducting a study as to how the Election was conducted in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the obstacles faced by the Sri Lankan authorities, and how those obstacles were overcome.
A group of Sri Lankan experts, as well as foreign experts based in Sri Lanka, will be conducting the study on behalf of ANFREL.
The PAFFREL Executive Director further stated that the report on the study will be available soon after the General Election.
