The Gazette notification to promote the renewable energy sector with private investment support will most likely be issued next week, Director (Development) Ministry of Power, Sulakshana Jayawardana said. He said that the Government plans to encourage renewable energy through private sector investment, and that prospective investors will be invited to submit proposals for renewable energy development as a result.

He went on to state that, in accordance with the President’s election vow, the Government intends to meet 70 per cent of its energy demands through renewable sources by 2030. “We intend to fulfil the policy objective by 2030,” she says. In this atmosphere, we will rely primarily on wind and sun.

Some hydropower projects are currently being built. In addition to these large-scale projects, we have 200 megawatts of micro hydro power plants,” Jayawardana said. Sri Lanka generated 15,714 Gwh of power last year, according to central bank estimates. Coal power plants contributed for 36.6 per cent of total energy consumption, while furnace oil accounted for 26.6 per cent. Hydropower accounted for 24.9 per cent, while non-conventional renewable energy sources accounted for 11.9 per cent.
