Fuel price hike : Party Leaders denounce SLPP attempt to frame Udaya
Leaders of eight constituent political parties of the government, issuing a statement, denounce the attempt to hold Minister Udaya Gammanpila solely responsible for the recent fuel price hike.
'The decision for the fuel price hike was approved by the Sub Committee on Cost of Living during a meeting chaired by the President, and attended by the Prime Minister', they pointed out.
The General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Sagara Kariyawasam, issued a statement on Saturday (12), demanding the resignation of the Minister of Energy over the increase in fuel prices.
The statement issued by the party leaders today (14) noted the fact that Kariyawasam's actions of placing the blame solely on Gammanpila had not only thrown the government into an unnecessary crisis in the eyes of the people, but also fueled doubts of divisions existing within the government.
'Such acts will only dampen the trust and confidence that the public have placed in the Government', they stated, adding that this required the immediate attention of both the President and the Prime Minister.
The joint statement was signed by Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera, Leader of the Our People's Power Party, Minister Wimal Weerawansa, Leader of the National Freedom Front, Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Leader of the Democratic Left Front, Prof. Tissa Vitharana Leader of Lanka Sama Samaja Party, A.L.M. Athaulla, Leader of the National Congress, Dr. G. Weerasinghe, Leader of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, Tiran Alles, Leader of United People's Party and Asanka Nawarathne from the Sri Lanka People’s Party.
