FR Petition challenges Cabraal’s appointment
By Kamal Weeraratne
A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition was filed yesterday against the appointment of Ajith Nivard Cabraal as the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL).
The petition was filed by SJB Parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara. The petitioner had stated that the action of the Government to appoint an ex-State Minister, as the new Governor of the CBSL, had violated provisions in the Article 12 (1) of the Constitution and the Finance Act No. 37 of 1974.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa, CBSL Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal, the Central Bank Monetary Board, and Secretary to the President Dr. P.B. Jayasundera have been named as respondents. The petitioner alleged that Cabraal has been charged with embezzlement of public funds. Thereby, the petition sought an Order from the Apex Court to invalidate the appointment of Cabraal as CBSL Governor.
