Four arrested for possession of Heroin

Police seized 32.47 grams of heroin valued at Rs 921,002.46 in four separate detections made island-wide on 14 September, Police said on 15 September.

They included 10.56 grams of heroin seized at Welsanpura, Wakwella, Galle, 10 grams at Henpita, Welipanna, Kalutara, 9.84 grams at Payagala, Kalutara, Panadura, and 2.11 grams of heroin at Thalapitiya, Galle.  

The Wakwella detection was made with the aid of Police sniffer dogs and a 45-year-old woman from the area was arrested in this connection. Meanwhile, in the Henpita detection, a 43-year-old man from the area was taken into custody. In the Payagala detection, Police took into custody a 26-year-old youth who is a resident of Pinwatte Road, Panadura and in the Thalapitiya detection, the Police took into custody a 44-year-old man. 

Meanwhile, four suspects, including two women (32 and 42-years-old), were arrested at Uyilankulama, Pudukudiirippu for smuggling 52 kilos of Kerala cannabis and 920 kilos of turmeric. They were nabbed, during a special joint mission carried out by the Police Special Task Force and the Army, while transporting the smuggled goods, on 15 September morning. In addition, five notes of USD 100, cash worth over Rs 1.7 million, a lorry and a tractor with a trailer have also been taken into custody. 

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspects were involved in large-scale drug rackets. The suspects were initially handed over to the Mannar Police and were later produced before the Mannar Magistrate on 15 September and the female suspects were detained as per an order for seven days. The male suspects (23 and 48-year-old) were released on surety bail of Rs 200,000 each. The suspects were handed over to the Mannar Police for investigations.
