Foundation stone laying for renovating Deegavapiya Stupa today
The foundation stone laying ceremony for the ‘Deegawapiya Stupa’ renovation will commence under the guidance of the Chief Prelate of the Deegawapiya Temple, Ven. Mahaoya Sobitha Thera at its premises today (22).
Prime Minister and the Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will be the Chief Guest.
The procedure will continue with the assistance of the Armed Forces and the Civil Security Department under the directives of the Defence Secretary and the Chairperson of the ‘Archaeological Heritage Management Presidential Task Force for the Eastern Province’, Major General (Retired) Kamal Gunaratne.
The programme would be propelled with the technical proficiency and advice provided by the archaeologists and professionals at the Archaeology Department.
Funds, generated through the Deegawapiya Trust and raised through sponsors and religious devotees including those abroad would be utilised to complete renovations.
The Deegawapiya Buddhist temple is a site dating back to the 3rd Century BC and built by King Saddhatissa.
