By Hansi Nanayakkara
Colombo Chief Magistrate Mohammad Mihal, on Friday (22), further remanded till 3 February former Chairman of Selacine Television Station, Pradeep Udaya Kumara Edirisinghe.
The suspect had been charged with the misappropriation of a sum of one billion rupees after having deposited the monies belonging to the Station to its welfare fund.
The Chief Magistrate said he was rejecting the bail application of the suspect as he had not seen any valid reasons to enlarge him on bail.
The Magistrate further said that the reasons put forth by the suspect to seek bail, in a simultaneous case filed against him, had warranted him to be released on bail and the Court ordered him to be released on a cash bail of Rs 25,000 and two sureties of Rs 500,000 each.
The FCID had filed charges against the suspect for having misappropriated the aforesaid sum belonging to the said TV Station from 2010 to 2015.
A complaint had been lodged with the FCID in this connection by the present Chairman of the TV Station.
An Interpol red notice had previously been issued for the arrest of the suspect. Later it had been notified to Court that the suspect would surrender to the CID having undergone the quarantine programme upon his return to the country and as a result he had been taken into custody on 20 January.
He was then produced in Court on the following day and was ordered to be remanded till yesterday.
