Plans underway to build 5 new universities: UGC
The University Grants Commission (UGC) said that plans are underway to construct five new universities in five districts.
According to Vice-Chairperson of the UGC, Prof. Janitha Liyanage, the new universities will be built in Kalutara, Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Hambantota and Mullaitivu.
Five teams consisting of professors have been appointed for the planning of this project.
Admission to these new universities will not be based on the Z-score. Students who pass the Advanced Level examination will have the opportunity to enroll in the university based on the results of a proficiency test.
Degree programs and diploma courses for these five universities will be designed targeting the job market in the respective district.
“The process of acquiring lands for the new universities is currently underway, and construction will commence before the end of this year,” Prof. Liyanage added.
