Fisheries Minister assures safe return of fishermen detained in Myanmar
Fisheries Minister Douglas Devnanda says that immediate action will be taken to release the fishermen detained by the Government of Myanmar.
The Minister assured this during a meeting held with the families of the arrested fishermen at the Fisheries Ministry.
The Government of Myanmar seized two fishing boats and arrested 12 fishermen in February 2021, and were later sentenced to jail terms of three to five years on three charges and a fine of 200,000 kyats.
The relatives of the fishermen pointed out that their families are facing financial hardships due to the breadwinners of the families being detained in Myanmar.
The Minister added that as Myanmar is moving away from the democratic framework to a military rule, diplomatic relations with such a county has proven to be difficult.
