Fisheries Corporation to purchase accumulated fish stocks
The Fisheries Corporation has purchased the fish stocks that have been accumulated due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus in the country.
This was stated by the Minister of Plantation Industries and Co-Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Ramesh Pathirana at the Government Information Department today (27).
He also thanked Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda and the Minister of State Kanchana Wijesekera for taking immediate action to purchase the fish stocks.
He further stated that the fish stocks are being purchased as the situation which arose three days ago has subsided, and the health sector has actively intervened and given permission to lift the restriction that fish should not be allowed to land for 72 hours.
In addition, the government has proposed to remove the tax concessions on salmon due to the problem faced by the fishing community. The Government will also utilise the fish for salmon factories on a large scale in order to give some impetus to the fish trade.
He added that the Government has already allocated Rs. 200 million to purchase fish for this purpose.
