Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda said the first phase compensation for the fishermen who were impacted after the X-Press Pearl vessel disaster will be given soon.

He said solutions will be provided expeditiously, assessing all impacts caused to the fishermen, and added that relief will be given to fishermen after holding discussions in connection with the hike of fuel prices as well. Devananda said so during a meeting with the representatives of fisheries societies in Negombo. The meeting was held at the Negombo Municipal Council Auditorium. The fishermen said they were facing untold hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic and fuel price hike and sought compensation.

They also said they were disappointed with the quality of fishing nets available in the market and requested quality fishing nets. Furthermore, the fishermen also drew attention to the fact that 10,000 fishery families have been affected by the disruptions caused to fishing activities.
