Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, former IGPs N.K. Illangakoon and Pujith Jayasundara and several others were noticed to appear before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) appointed to probe political victimisation of public officials during the tenure of the Yahapalana Government.
They are to appear before the PCoI on 20 October based on a complaint lodged by Minister Udaya Gammanpila, that his arrest during the Yahapalana Government, over the alleged use of a false Power of Attorney for the sale of shares of an Australian Company belonging to an individual named Bryan John Shadick in 1997 was politically motivated.
Testifying before the PCoI on Saturday (17), Gammanpila stated he was subjected to political vengeance when he left the Jathika Hela Urumaya in which Champika was the Secretary in 2015 and formed a new political party named Pivithuru Hela Urumaya which was in support of incumbent Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
He added that while an individual named Lasitha Perera, who was exercising the power of Attorney of Shadick, requested the Police Special Investigation Unit to investigate the alleged incident in 2015, Shadick had not however contacted him over any such allegations during the 18 years prior to the commencement of such investigations.
Gammanpila added that Illangakoon and Jayasundara had also used the director of the SIU, Mevan Silva and the Attorney General’s Department to defame him.
