FIDE Online Chess Olympiad 2020: National Chess Team to participate
FIDE, the World Chess Federation, has decided to hold an online Chess Olympiad this year to be held from 4 to 25 August. The Sports organisation which has the maximum number of member countries next to IOC, is expecting at least 180 countries to participate in the event.
A new format will be introduced for the event. Two males, two females, and two juniors (one male and one female under-20) will comprise the team. A country may include the same number of reserves as well.
The event will be in five stages. Sri Lanka is in the third stage because of the country’s ranking and will commence their campaign on 4 August.
The National Selection Committee has selected the following team to participate in this most prestigious event:
Harshana Thilakarathne (Captain - Maliyadeva College Kurunegala), Isuru Alahakoon (Sri Lanka Navy), Devnethmi Dahampriya (Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo), Ashvini Pavalchandran (Wycherly International School Colombo), Lasal de Silva (Nalanda College Colombo), Sayuni Gihansa Jayaweera (Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda), Chinthaka Anuruddha (Kandy YMCA CC), Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage (Ananda College Colombo), Nethmi Fernando (Girls High School Kandy), Sachini Ranasinghe (NF3 Chess Club), Minul Sanjula Doluweera (Royal College Colombo), Niklesha Tharushi (Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo), Ransith Fernando has been appointed as the Manager and Rajendra Kalugampitiya as the Coach of the team.
