England wins first test against Sri Lanka by 7 wickets
England cruised to a comfortable win on Day 5 of the 1st test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International stadium today.
On day 4 Sri Lanka was bowled out for a second innings score of 359 runs. Lahiru Thirimanne batted patiently and scored his second test century but was dismissed at 111 runs by Sam Curran. Former Skipper Angelo Matthews played cautiously as he attempted to ensure that Sri Lanka bats out day 4, however after batting for 219 deliveries, Mathews was dismissed for 71.
Set a target of 74 runs for victory England stumbled getting off the mark as they lost their top 3 batsmen for paltry scores. At stumps on Day 4 England were 38/3.
However, that was the only success that the Sri Lanka bowlers enjoyed as Jonny Bairstow guided the guests comfortably past the required score with an unbeaten knock of 35 runs.
Earlier England hammered a massive first innings score of 421 runs in response to Sri Lanka's first innings score of 135.
