Minister of Public Services, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, said while letters of appointment have been handed over to 49,478 graduates, 6,175 of them have not been accepted by the graduates.
He added that while 50,000 graduates were to be employed initially, an additional 10,000 graduates were to be provided with employment opportunities, out of which 49,478 graduates had been selected.
There has been a delay in providing training to these graduates due to the COVID-19 crisis, he said, adding that steps are underway to conduct training in adherence to the health guidelines.
Tennakoon added that appeals made from graduates who were not selected under the initial graduate scheme due to certain shortfalls in the education certificate issued by their university, are currently being looked into. He further said while a decision on these graduates will be arrived at without delay, a decision to provide relief to graduates who will not be selected even following an appeal, will also be arrived at. Instructions have also been given for the quick confirmation of graduates employed in 2019 by the United National Front Government, Tennakoon said, adding that this confirmation too would take place soon.
