Economic statusno reason to send children as domestics – Nishantha
BY HANSI NANAYAKKARA
State Minister of Women and Child Development, Piyal Nishantha said parents had no right to allow minors to be employed as maids despite facing dire economic conditions.
He said that under any circumstance allowing underage children to serve at households as maids or domestic helpers is a crime according to the country’s law. Nishantha said having identified poverty stricken families in the upcountry areas, his Ministry will shortly initiate a programme to empower women.
The State Minister added that his Ministry will also identify children of upcountry families who remain at home without going to school and noted that such children will be encouraged to go to school under a mechanism which will be put in place.
He added that a committee has also been set up to seek views and proposals with regard to amendments to be introduced to the DSO and stated that based on the proposals, the Act will be amended accordingly.
