News Easter Attacks : Zaharan’s wife, five others remanded

Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage, yesterday (22), ordered Abdul Cader Fathima Hadiya, wife of the mastermind of last year’s Easter Sunday terror attacks and leader of an extremist organisation Zaharan Hashim, and five other suspects, to be remanded till 4 November.

Hadiya, who was held on detention orders by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for 18 months, was thus ordered to be incarcerated along with the five other suspects, by Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage till the aforesaid date, when they were produced before him, after the expiry of their detention orders.

The Chief Magistrate also issued an order to the Prisons Director, to produce Zaharan’s wife before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) probing last year’s Easter Sunday Blasts, today (23).

Meanwhile, the PCoI probing the 21 April 2019, Easter Sunday Bombings, is due to announce its decision as to whether evidence should be recorded from Hadiya, today.

Officers of the CID brought her before the Commission yesterday. Although she appeared before the Commission as a witness, no evidence was taken from her yesterday.

Senior Additional Solicitor General, Sarath Jayamanne PC and a few officials from the Attorney General's (AG) Department also appeared before the Commission. There was also a confidential discussion between the Commission and the AG's Department officials on whether to obtain evidence from Hadiya.

According to sources of the Commission, the AG's Department officials, during the discussion, had pointed out that obtaining evidence from her before the Commission could hamper cases that are being heard against her. The decision on whether to obtain evidence from her is to be announced today.

Announcing that the Commission Members should discuss matters pertaining to the Attorney General's Department's submissions on recording evidence from Hadiya, the Chairman of the Commission adjourned its proceedings until 10:00 a.m. today.
