Dual citizenship creates dangerous precedent - Karu
The Chairman of the National Movement for Social Justice Karu Jayasuriya has criticised the decision taken by the Government to allow those possessing dual citizenship to seek higher political office through the proposed Bill for the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.
He observed, if those in possession of dual citizenships are allowed to enter Parliament, then it will create a dangerous precedent which could be harmful to the country both in the short to long term.
He described the clause allowing dual citizens to enter Parliament through the new Bill as a well planned conspiracy that is hatched by forces which are hell bent on destabilising this nation both politically and otherwise.
Jayasuriya has urged the Government to at least listen to the sentiments expressed by the country’s religious leaders instead of being in undue haste to ratify dangerous and harmful clauses to both the people and the country.
