By Thameenah Razeek
In the backdrop of instances where certain drug addicts and drug dealers are attempting to escape from COVID-19 treatment centres, the Police have initiated a special strategy to probe these activities and to take appropriate measures.
Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana said the Police, after analysing the reported cases of COVID-19 positive patients escaping from treatment centres, had ascertained that those escapees are connected to drug-related offences or were drug addicts.
“Therefore, we are going to implement a special strategy in respect of drug dependents that have tested positive for COVID-19. In addition to that, the close contacts of these drug addicts including friends and family members have a responsibility to inform the health authorities if these persons are found,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Private Security Unit of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) arrested a 22-year-old COVID-19 patient at 6:30 p.m. on 22 November at the Hospital. The individual was trying to escape from the COVID-19 treatment ward. Steps were taken to transfer the individual to another secure treatment centre, yesterday (23).
