The Jaffna Municipal Council plans to renovate drainages and other waterbodies within the Municipality limits from the funds allocated for 2020, Municipal Councilor K.M. Nilam said yesterday (21).
Under the first phase of the proposed development plan, attention is given to renovate and develop the overflowing drainage systems within Municipality limits.
He said renovation work on the Sinnakkumam and Periya Kulam Reservoirs are underway for the past three days and that garbage thrown into these reservoirs is being removed and forest areas cleared using backhoe machines.
A large amount of silt has been removed from those reservoirs, he said.
Nilam stated that the Mayor has been informed that many places in the Bommaiveli area in the J-87 and J-88 Grama Niladhari Divisions get inundated owing to floods during the rainy season and that it has been stressed on the necessity of finding a sustainable solution for it.
