Dr. Asela Gunawardena assumes duties as DGHS
Former Director of the Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila, Dr. Asela Gunawardena, assumed duties as the new Director General of Health Services (DGHS) of the Department of Health, yesterday (29).
He succeeds former DGHS, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, who was appointed as the Secretary to the Ministry of Environment.
Assuming duties, Dr. Asela Gunawardena said he was prepared to battle COVID-19 with public support.
Dr. Gunawardena said although quarantine curfew had been imposed in various areas following the identification of a main cluster at the Brandix facility in Minuwangoda and a sub-cluster at the Peliyagoda Fish Market to curtail the movement of the people in those areas, there were reports that people used the available byroads to commute.
Dr. Gunawardena is a Medical Graduate of the Peradeniya University and earned his Postgraduate Degree in Medical Administration from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, Colombo. He also received a Postgraduate Degree in Business Administration from the Open University, a Diploma and a Postgraduate Degree in Buddhist Studies, from the Kelaniya University.
He worked as the District Medical Officer at the Monaragala Badalkumbura Hospital in 1994. He served as the Women’s Health and Child Health Officer at the Badulla Regional Director of Health Services Office. From 2001 to 2003, he served as the Director of Health Services for the Monaragala District. He also was the Medical Superintendant at General Hospital, Horana and Director of the Mulleriyawa Hospital.
Members of the Clergy, Health Secretary, Maj. Gen. Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe and several other officials of the Ministry were present.
