Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera urged the Government not to give the COVID vaccine to schoolchildren, without properly testing. Ven. Sobitha Thera, addressing a media briefing called by the COVID-19 Death Prevention Association (CDPA), appealed to the Government yesterday (14) not to permit the use of Sri Lankan children as guinea pigs. “There is no scientifically based evidence that allows giving the coronavirus vaccine to children.

“Therefore, they should not be vaccinated and be used for research and experiments,” he stressed. “We all need to be far-sighted in the face of this crisis. But at present it seems to be what is lacking,” he lamented. Virologist Professor Tissa Vitarana and Chest Physician Dr. Channa de Silva are of the opinion that hasty decisions should not be taken with regard to vaccinating children, he noted. “The World Health Organisation (WHO) says it is unethical to vaccinate children.

So, who decides about their inoculation? At first it was said the COVID vaccine prevented the disease. After that people were told that even if they contracted the disease, they would not get complications. Then it was said that they would not succumb to the virus even if they had complications. But did everyone who got the jab survive the disease?” he queried.

“Why subject our children to such a scientific procedure where there is so much indecisiveness and uncertainty,” the Thera queried. He called for the Government to implement its decision to open schools. At the same time parents should be taught the know- how of creating safe medicine in accordance with indigenous medicine. There are parent organisations and indigenous medical practitioners dedicated to this, he added. “Allow children to defeat the coronavirus through natural immunisation. Do not subject them to scientific experiments, he appealed.
