Domestic Servants Ordinance to be amended
By Kumudu Upul Shantha
The Ministry of Labour has decided to amend the 150-year-old Domestic Servants Ordinance (DSO) with the intention of preventing minors from being employed as maids and to introduce new laws related to housemaids etc.
Sources from the Ministry stated that with the amendments to be introduced to the DSO new regulations will be drafted to institute stern legal action against those who employ minors as domestic servants, to allow those being employed as maids legally being entitled to EPF and ETF, etc. Labour Commissioner General Attorney H. Chandrakeerthi said that the DSO, which had been formulated back in 1871, cannot be construed as an Act from the true sense of the word and observed that through it what has been done to date are minors are only being registered as maids.
