Do not compromise people's lives: Ranil
Former Prime Minister and the Leader of the UNP Ranil Wickremesinghe has warned the Government not to compromise people’s lives by focusing on the economy and alleges that the Sri Lankan Rupee depreciated to record levels due to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka printing more money.
In a statement, Wickremesinghe has urged the Government to seek out medical advice on controlling the spread of COVID-19 in the country and points out the importance of the establishment of a new program to combat the virus.
Moreover, commenting on the need for 30 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, Wickremesinghe said that if the country invested 200 million dollars in the research stage for the vaccine, Sri Lanka would not be facing a shortage now.
He also alleged that the Government prioritised foreign exchange over its own people, and should be blamed for bringing in Indian tourists and worsening the country's COVID-19 situation.
In addition, Wickremesinghe also requested the President not to sideline the Cabinet, as the President and the Cabinet can exercise their powers and make plans for curbing the spread of COVID-19, as existing committees have not been able to do such.
