Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has called for an environmental report on the discolouration of the Diyawanna Oya surrounding Parliament.

Amaraweera has instructed the Director General of the Central Environmental Authority Hemantha Jayasinghe to submit an extensive environmental report on the discolouration of the waters of the Diyawanna Oya around Parliament as well as in the wetlands surrounding the three bridges in Battaramulla.

The Minister said it was not clear whether the reason for this was human waste being discharged into the water or the growth of algae, as stated by the Opposition in Parliament.

However, the Minister further said he was awaiting a scientific report on the matter as the water in the Diyawanna Oya has not been polluted in this manner before.

The Minister further said water levels in the area has been increasing in the past few days and is being investigated whether there is any contamination of the water and whether it was harmful to aquatic life.
