Diaz wins first ever Olympic gold for Philippines
Philippines’ Hidilyn Diaz became her country’s first ever Olympic gold medallist on Monday, winning the women’s 55 kg category for weightlifting at Tokyo 2020. In her fourth Olympics, the 30-year-old lifted a combined weight of 224 kg, an Olympic record.
“I am 30-years-old and I thought it would be like going down, my performance, but I was shocked I was able to do it,” Diaz said in a postmatch interview. Philippines’ presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a written statement that Diaz brought pride and glory to the Philippines. “Congratulations, Hidilyn. The entire Filipino nation is proud of you,” he added. (Reuters)
