Devananda confident about proposed fisheries projects

Chairing a discussion at the Fisheries Ministry on proposed fisheries sector development projects to be implemented next year, subject Minister Douglas Devananda said they will be in accordance with the Government’s economic policies. He said that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government has taken all possible steps to improve the economy and that cyclone Buravi had damaged multiday fishing trawlers worth millions of rupees, severely affecting the livelihood of a large number of fishermen who make a living at sea.
Devananda added that fishermen in the Northern and Eastern Provinces will be able to earn enough money through projects such as sea cucumber farming instead of going out to deep sea. He also directed officials to implement more projects across the country so that it would benefit all fishermen. Indhu Ratnayake, Secretary of the Fisheries Ministry, and a large number of fisheries sector officials were present during this meeting.
