Destruction of Jaffna University monument: SJB Urges Impartial Probe
By Buddhika Samaraweera
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP, Dr. Kavinda Jayawardena, urged authorities, including the Minister of Education, to conduct an impartial inquiry into the recently reported destruction of the monument erected at Jaffna University.
He said the law must be enforced against those who supported the incident. Adding that there were similar monuments in other universities in the country and that none of them were erected to commemorate terrorists, Dr. Jayawardena said they were erected only to commemorate civilians who died in the war.
“The Government is currently creating unnecessary fear among the people. This incident should definitely be looked into,” he said, and requested the authorities, including the Minister of Education, to conduct an impartial inquiry into the matter.
Speaking at a Media briefing at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Colombo, he also said that the President and the subject Minister were making contradictory statements regarding the East Container Terminal (ECT) of the Colombo Port. The Government should reach a decision in this regard and take action to make the people aware of it, he said.
