Desandhi leads pack of four with better tie breaker

Day one of the event organised by Chess Federation of Sri Lanka came to a thrilling finish with Desandhi Dhihansa Gamage of Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya leading the pack of four with a better tie breaker, after sharing an impressive score of 4/4 games.

The talented youngster beat K.T.S. Karannagoda, H.G.K.G. Amarathunga, Dulinma Hemalni Rathnayake and Chanthuli Thanishka de Silva. Three other players, Piyumi Amarathunga of JMC College, Kalutara, Ashvini Pavalachandran of Wycherley International School and Esandi Newansa of Dharmasoka College are hot on her heels. In 2nd position on tie breaker is Piyumi Uthpala Amarathunga. 

She beat Lethmini Navodya Wellala, Oneli Vihanga Weerawardana, Nemindi Linaya Ramayanake and D.A.D.T. Srilal. In joint 3rd position (with less tie breaking points) is Women’s National team member Ashvini Pavalachandran who beat Ansshi Anumitha Arunrojan, Minuli Kumarasinghe, Javindi Avarjana Akuratiya and Yasasi Geemini Abeysekara The fourth player sharing joint 3rd position (also with less tie breaking points) is Esandi Newansa. She beat Diyenka Samarasekara, Prasansa Premanath, Oneli Omaya Wilvalaarachchi and Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana. 

To ensure young chess prodigies keep playing the game they love, CFSL organised this event on 15 and 16 of May amidst a global pandemic. The tournament was held via chess.com platform with strict anti-cheating measures and supervision throughout by the arbiters. 70 players are participating in the tournament. 4 of the 7 rounds ended on day one.
