Delta plus variant not detected in SL – Dr. Jeewandara
By Nabiya Vaffoor
The Delta plus variant of SARS-CoV-2, which is being detected in UK, India, and several other countries, has not been detected in Sri Lanka yet, Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Director of the Allergy, Immunology, and Cell Biology Unit at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) said yesterday (21). In a tweet, Dr. Jeewandara said,“We have not detected Delta plus in our laboratory so far.
All our sequence data are uploaded real-time and are available to the public. I wanted to confirm as I get many queries.” In response to a query posed by a twitter user about reports that health authorities are on high alert over the Delta plus variant infecting even those fully vaccinated, Dr. Jeewandara said such reports might be from another sequencing facility. “I am not sure about this report.
As we are the main sequencing facility for the country (until now), just wanted to clarify our data.” Dr. Jeewandara’s lab has been gene sequencing tests to identify variants of SARS-CoV-2 spreading in Sri Lanka since the onset of the pandemic.
