Death of maid employed by Bathiudeen: Body to be Exhumed Tomorrow

Remains of Jude Kumar Ishalini, the 16-year-old girl who worked as a domestic helper at ex-Minister Rishad Bathiudeen’s house, will be exhumed tomorrow (30). The three-member Panel of Experts, appointed yesterday (28), to conduct the second post-mortem will pay a visit to the burial grounds in Dayagama tomorrow. Police spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said the Panel of Experts was appointed after the Director-General of Health Services nominated them and the Attorney General recommended them.
Professor Jean Perera, Professor of Forensic Medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Colombo, Senior Lecturer Dr. Sameera Gunawardena, Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Colombo, and Dr. Prabhath Senasinghe, Consultant Judicial Medical Officer at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, are the members of the Expert Panel. The body will be exhumed with the help of all professionals and stakeholders in the field, under the supervision of an appropriate Magistrate.
Three people have been arrested so far in connection with the death of the 16-year-old girl. They are wife of the former minister, his father-in-law, and a broker, Ponnaiah Bandaram alias Shankar, who is accused of trafficking the girl for domestic service. In addition, ex-Minister Bathiudeen’s brother-in-law was detained by the Police in connection with the rape of another maid. The 16-year-old girl’s grave in Dayagama, is currently under Police guard. The Police Spokesman went on to say the incident is still under investigation.
