Death of Bathiudeen's maid: CID reveals records, files deleted from confiscated mobile phone
The statements of four more persons have been recorded in connection with the death of the 16-year-old domestic aide employed by Leader of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) MP Rishad Bathiudeen.
Investigations conducted by the Borella Police, Children and Women’s Bureau, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) lead the teams to Puwakpitiya, Awissawella, where the victim had resided prior to moving to Dayagama.
The statements of four persons, including the principal and vice principal of the school the victim had attended, were recorded, whilst statements from more persons in Dayagama are also to be recorded.
Police Media Spokesman SDIG Ajith Rohana noted that a statement from the victim’s mother too, will be recorded again.
The mobile phone of a male domestic servant who was also employed by MP Bathiudeen has been handed over to the CID. Investigations have revealed that certain records and files have been deleted from the device.
The 16-year0old vitim had been working as a domestic aide at the private residence of SJB MP Rishad Bathiudeen and was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital on 03 July after sustaining serious burn injuries. She later succumbed to her injuries on 15 July.
Following the autopsy conducted by the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO), it was revealed that she had been sexually exploited over a long period of time, whilst also indicating that she may have died by suicide through self-immolation.
Police have recorded statements from the victim’s mother, an uncle of MP Rishad Bathiudeen, and her brother, whilst further investigations are being conducted by the Borella Police and the Colombo South Division Children and Women’s Bureau.
The prosecution added that the girl had been brought to serve at MP Bathiudeen’s residence in October last year, at the age of 15 years and 11 months.
